Weekly Reflection: Stories Giving Shape and What I’ve Learned

journey_into_the_unknownWhat do I think when I when I hear about stories having shape? I think that such a concept means that each story paints a unique picture to the one that reads or experiences it. When I hear the word “shape” associated with a story I link that with the quality of depth associated with a story and how that unique depth, or detail of a given story, influences a given individual. I can only assume that some people choose to take away different messages or morals from a story/film that they’ve read/seen, as we are all unique individuals, non of us are the same in appearance or in mental ability and preferences. That’s been my experience up to this point. A story has a particular shape to everyone because it’s contents are perhaps unique to everyone? It influences and shapes everyone’s mind a different way. In my opinion, nothing is perceived exactly identical by anyone. A story has shape just as an abstract piece of art has deeper meaning. Its message, its contents are subjective to interpretation, just as subjective and unique how it influences people.

Now, onto the topic of of what we’ve done up until now in class, I can honestly say that I am a bit stumped. Perhaps it is because I am not the biggest technological buff or perhaps I do not keep up with the ever changing and ever increasing forms of technology, but these twitter bots have me a bit stumped. Perhaps I misread how to use or get a hold of prompts by the source (might have made no sense there), but I inquired about getting a prompt from the source and have yet to get a reply. Maybe a complication on my part, but I have yet to make any progress in that area. Hopefully I can remedy this situation so I don’t fall to far behind my fellow peers.

I have enjoyed the simple tasks of our daily digital alchemy assignments and blog posts up this point, as when I read them they offer me a little bit of insight as to who I am surrounded by during my weekly class. I like what i’ve read up to this point and although I haven’t written that many responses yet, I can say with absolute certainty that  that will change. I look forward to reading more about what you have to say about this class and the prompts that we are given in the future. Some of you have influenced me to see things in a different light, and that is saying something.

I look forward to what awaits us in our upcoming classes, though I think I may need to someone to elaborate on the inner workings of certain assignments that require as to have some working knowledge of certain technological systems, as I seem to be quite the novice when it comes to using some of the sites that we’ve used thus far. Last week’s improve activity was fun, though I didn’t expect to be caught so off guard by some of the more simpler or complex pieces. Guess I can no longer cling to being an expert in that area after my performance. Anyway, until our later sessions.

A Necromancer is Weeping inside a Universe.

Have you ever lost someone that brought joy to your life? someone that filled you filled you with positivity and joy, but with their passing made you feel empty? What would you do to bring that joy back into your life?

I have lost my beloved to cruel and unmerciful code of the universe. Time has robbed my of that who I held so close to my heart and with her passing some off me has gone too. I feel like a shell of my former self, I feel empty and nothing that I can think of or that I have experienced following this tragedy reinvigorates me, makes me yearn to keep going. I know what I must do, it’s been staring me in the face. I’ll bring her back. She who kept the light inside me burning at its brightest as opposed to the now small flickering flame that tries its hardest to persist inside me. I devoted the entirety of my time to the persecuted art of necromancy – the art of conjuring the dead.

I devoted myself wholly to my experiment of bringing back the woman I loved, nothing else mattered. I a year of my life to finding my answer, casting my friends out of my life, losing my job, basically losing it all. But that all didn’t matter, all that mattered was her, so I needed to do this right. The day had come where I believed I had collected all the necessary resources and the proper knowledge to proceed with the experiment. I wasted no time and proceeded and with the resulting creation of a shroud of smoke that obstructed my vision at what I had created it was done. In the end I thought I had succeeded, though just when I was given hope it was it was almost immediately taken away from me. What I saw did not not resemble my beloved, in fact what I had brought into the world was a deformed creature. It possessed the features of a human, but it looked butchered, everything was where it shouldn’t have been. I had failed in my endeavor, the light inside me was extinguished. I lost the will to try my hand at the experiment again after witnessing the abomination that I had created. If that had in fact been my beloved I had indeed massacred her, and I did not have the heart or the strength to face another failure such as this again. I realized that I could never really have her back and that I was doing more harm to her and myself than good. So I proceeded to venture into the dark and unknown recesses of the world, away from all the false hopes of happiness that presented themselves to me. I knew now that there was no true happiness left in the world for me.

A Unique Interpretation of the 4 Elements

The task of taking pictures of that which has relevance and embody the 4 elements was not a grueling task. I mean they are the things that allow are all living things to thrive sustain themselves in this world. They make up the very world itself. Possessing such a quality it’s pretty easy to understand that something(s) that represent each of these elements in a literal and symbolic way wouldn’t be too hard to find. They’re all around us.

Had I been outside I would have need for you a picture of the sun, fo it is the embodiment of heat/warmth, for without it all life in our galaxy would perish. So my being inside gave me fewer options, but, of course, in my attempt to stay warm that which embodies fire (warmth) was located right behind me – the heating/cooling vents. It symbolizes fire in its ability to keep me warm, something that is most valuable during these winter months.

For my next picture, which represents the element of water, we have a sink. I would think this would be the most immediate prompt for water in how its primary purpose is to siphon and release water for whatever an individual’s needs may be. I go to this thing whenever I need water, whether it’s for cooking, boiling, to make coffee for my mom, you name it. In this case, it’s just one of those stares you in the face as though it’s saying, “could I be anymore blunt?”.

the next picture, which represents earth, I have for you my trusty knife. Much like earth, in how it’s everywhere I go, so is this knife. I carry it everywhere I go…unless the law forbids it. In addition, it’s crafted out of earth. Earth that has been refined and purified over a number of time until it has achieved its state of steel.

Lastly, the picture that I have that represents air is the air ventilation system. It being winter I would much rather taken a picture of a lush tree or any other foliage which produces oxygen, but they are in a dormant state. As it’s in the name the air vents distribute and recycle oxygen throughout the multiple rooms in closed up structures, enabling us to go about our chores within said structure.

It’s a matter of unique and biased perspective how one analyzes and labels something to be what they claim. The thoughts that flow through one’s mind which are later printed/typed for us to judge unique to that one individual. Some of you might never have considered any of the things that I chose to represent the 4 elements to be something that you would ever consider to be your choice of representative photos, but this is how I perceive them to be. We are none of us the same and that is a good thing as we all see and consider things differently, and that aspect about us invites discovery.

Thoughts on Digital Alchemy

The traditional concept of alchemy is the process transmuting/altering upon the properties of something so as to bring out that something’s greatest potential. Make it shine in a sense of the word. My thoughts on what digital alchemy is, is that, depending on what is the topic of discussion, it is one’s ability make their product of hard work as captivating, interesting and convincing as possible through the use of skills ranging from creating language and proofreading to decoration through use of things such as pictures or videos in a digital setting. Now in my case I really wouldn’t go the extra mile to decorate the facts of a case I’m making or a story that I’m trying to tell because I’m simple person and I believe that my words speak for themselves. They are unpolished rocks/gems at first read/glance, but after they have been proofed, polished, that’s when their true potential comes to the surface. They reveal themselves to be the gems I always knew they could be. Now, with regard to adding the digital factor to the act of alchemy through the implementation of electronic tools such as videos, pictures, other electronic tools that serve to support or add some flare to your work, I can honestly say that I’m quite average if not below the bar of average when it comes to implementing such tools. I mean, it took me longer than I would like to admit to actually just create this blog in the state that it is now that you’re reading this on. Anyway, in summation, I believe that digital alchemy is the act of making use of all the electronic/digital resources that our modern day can provide us to make to bring out the best in a person and their work.
